Summer AmeriCorps positions with Lewisburg Community Garden and Bucknell University Farm

The Bucknell University Farm and the Lewisburg Community Garden are looking for two people to join our seasonal summer crew as AmeriCorps members! One member will serve as the Food Access Assistant, helping to ensure that our bounty of organic produce is properly harvested and stored, and quickly distributed to area food access programs. The other member will act as the Education and Outreach Coordinator, helping develop and lead the activities for our summer camps for kids from the Essex Place and Meadow View housing complexes and from the Buffalo Valley Recreation Authority. Both members will perform daily maintenance at the Lewisburg Community Garden and the Bucknell University Farm (watering, weeding, etc.), and will assist at the weekly Community Harvest hot meal program.

These positions will run from May 21 through August 3, and provide a living stipend of $3,636. Upon successful completion of the term, members will receive an education award of $1,612 to apply towards past, current, or future college tuition.

These positions are excellent for people passionate about food access, organic agriculture, and environmental sustainability. Previous horticultural experience is helpful, but not required – dedication, reliability, and a positive attitude are most important!

For more information or to apply, please contact Kyle Bray at kwb004@bucknell.edu, or 570-577-3928. Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled.

“Planting a seed for civic service in Susquehanna Valley”

“The Garden aspires to provide participants with opportunities that enrich their knowledge about  growing food in sustainable and environmentally friendly ways. Through educating participants in the techniques of gardening, as well as the benefits of healthy, locally grown foods, the Garden aims to expand the culture of cooperative, healthy, low-cost home gardening.”

A big thanks to the Bucknellian for their coverage on civic engagement and of the Community Garden!

Make sure to check out the garden and lend a helping hand as we wrap up the garden and finish some last harvesting and complete our new fence.

As American tastes quickly evolve, businesses begin to adopt a “fast fashion” strategy to keep up. Retailers such as Zara and Forever 21 churn out new clothes every week, Apple recently launched its X iPhone and has no plans to stop.

Bucknell Management student Angela Ri ’19 and Engineering student Anmol Singh ’18 analyze this issue through a sustainability lens and the implications of living in a society that encourages conspicuous consumption.

Presentation will focus on clothing and e-waste. Discussion will expand to cover disposable food service waste and how to have a zero-waste event.

When: Monday, October 16 at 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM

Where: Public Library for Union County

@255 Reitz Blvd, Lewisburg, PA 17837
