My AmeriCorps Year with the LCG

As part of my final few days with the Lewisburg Community Garden and Bucknell University, I’ve been asked to write about what my experience over the past year has been like. Let me start off with a story that really showed me how far I feel I’ve come. A few days ago, I was driving back to Lewisburg in the middle of a heavy thunderstorm during the early stages of rush hour traffic. I had been in the car for several hours and was getting anxious to arrive at home. After some traffic cleared, the road opened up again, but the […]

Caring for Broccoli

Broccoli is one of the most important vegetables for you and your garden. Everyone who isn’t an unbearably picky 5 year-old like I was has their favorite preparations of broccoli (my favorite was always watching the dog eat it, sorry dad). It’s high in B vitamins & fiber and used in cuisines across the world. Those wonderful things aside, broccoli can be tricky to grow in Central Pennsylvania. Without proper care, the hot summers and erratic weather can permanently damage crops even before cabbage beetles and slugs can make their way in. That’s why here at the LCG we’ve come up […]

THANK YOU & Survey

May 7th, 2016 was a day I was looking forward to for a really, really, long time. All the hard work that went into growing and caring for our plants culminated in a really great 5-hour sale. The outpouring of support that this local community continues to provide for the Lewisburg Community Garden continues to astound me. I’m really thankful to be part of a community that translates that passion for local projects into actions that will sustain us for the long term. All in all, we broke our fundraising goal of $3,000 and sold very nearly 1,300 plants! Our most […]

Season Totals!

Now that we’ve had some time to decompress from the long growing season, the Lewisburg Community Garden is happy to announce the final stats from the 2015 growing season! We also took great strides to figure out how much this is all worth. Based on seasonal prices from the USDA, we grew an estimated $6,243 worth of produce in 2015! All in all, we did a lot of great things this year for local food programs. With such great support from Bucknell University and the greater Lewisburg Community, we hope to do even better next year. Many compliments to our […]

End of the Season

The Lewisburg Community Garden finished up all of its operations on Thursday, December 3rd. After two straight days of rain, our volunteers came out in good numbers and pulled out all the remaining plants left for the year. A few of our friends from Lambda Chi Alpha at Bucknell were instrumental in helping us haul away all the excess green matter for composting. Two of our volunteers helped us end our season extension efforts by harvesting all the remaining spinach, kale, lettuce, and carrots. In total, we harvested 17 pounds of carrots and another 14 pounds of kale to add to […]

Season Extension Trials

What a great month November has been. Our first attempts at season extension have been more fruitful than we anticipated. Combined with a pleasant, unseasonably warm November, our season extension has allowed us to grow well beyond the end of the growing season and past Thanksgiving. Our spinach, kale, carrots, salad turnips, and lettuces survived some frigid overnight lows to see lots of sunshine and an average high of 58 degrees. We also planted onions and garlic to grow over winter under our low tunnels. With plenty of help from our volunteers, we constructed 6-25′ x 3′ low tunnels using frost-resistant […]
